November 2nd, 2011
The Saint Demetrios High School Varsity Soccer Team defeated the Heschell High School Soccer team with a score of 7-3 to win the prestigious PSAA(Private School Athletic Association) championship. The championship game was played at Con Edison field in Astoria on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 and was attended by numerous school officials, teachers, and parents including the Saint Demetrios School supervising principal Anastasios Koularmanis.
This championship victory is quite significant to the Saint Demetrios School and community due to the fact that the team’s participation in the PSAA is recent; it has been only three years since the team was initially organized by Coach Konstantinos Kontos, one of the school’s physical education instructors under the supervision of the school’s athletic director Peter Stasinos. Both men considered the talent of the young men who were interested in the sport and actively worked with them in forming a fine team. For the past two years the Saint Demetrios team played diligently and enthusiastically, earning 2nd place in the PSAA. With constant practice, determination, and spirit the players under the successful coaching of Kostas Soukeras not only won the final championship this year but were also recognized as the regular season champions earning a total of 21 points. The only loss this season took place in mid September when the Saint Demetrios team was defeated 3-0 by the Heschell team. ![]() Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors go to George Orsaris of the 11th grade who also served as the team captain.
